Technology Transfer at EiABC Print E-mail

Technology Transfer refers to the process by which academic findings and services are conveyed from a university setting to a commercial sector. The TT Office at EiABC was established in 2010, to support the research and consultancy enterprise of the Institute. As a public institution, EiABC has a responsibility to make its research findings and consultancy services available for the benefit of the community. This transfer of academic discoverand services is the core task of the TT Office. The TT Office undertakes this service for the Institute by working closely with the academic research and consultancy teams in determining the most effective methods for transfer of technology and know-how gained in a research process.


Major roles of Technology Transfer
Technology Transfer helps to introduce academic research to commercial entities. The TT Office at EiABC works with researchers and professional staff throughout the process to determine the best commercial partners. In cases where the best route to introducing new technology is through an existing commercial entity, it takes the leading role to establish contacts and to bring possibke partners together. In cases where the formation of a new commercialization process is desired, it can help to facilitate the necessary steps.

Major tasks of TT Office at EiABC

One of the major tasks of the TT Office at EiABC is to identify research activity of potential commercial interest. It provides feedback to the academic field, regarding possible commercial potential and tries to gear the tresearch process in this direction. It also assists in the preparation, filing, and signing of possible patent applications and developes commercialization strategies for the Institute. It can help to negotiate license agreements between partners and prepares Memorandum of Understandings, whereby it monitores EiABC policies on consultancy, research programs, contractual obligations and other services.
It advises the academic units on revenue-sharing agreements in accordance with the policies of EiABC and will try to attract new corporate funding partners.

Mission of TT Office at EiABC

The mission of the Technology Transfer Office at EiABC is to protect, manage and transfer EiABC owned intellectual property and services for the benefit of the Ethiopian society.
It is to improve and expand public-private relationships and to optimize fiscal and social benefits for EiABC and the academic community at large.
Research Services: EiABC has a policy of enhancing research programs through it`s academic units. Head of those activities is the Director for PhD Programs and Research.
Lab Services: Through a variety of lab machines EiABC has an extensive experience in providing lab facilities in testing construction materials and issuing an official certificate for the strength of materials that can be used in the construction industry. The following services are rendered by the laboratory:

Soil Testing
Fields investigation are core drilling, sampling, standard penetration (SPT), swedish weight sounding test (SWS), ground water level measurement (GWL), california bearing ratio, unconfined compression, tri-axial tests, grain size analysis, atterberg limits, moisture content, unit weight, specific gravity, free swell tests, swell pressure tests, direct shear tests, compaction tests, consolidation tests, permeability tests

Material Strength Test
Compressive strength of blocks, bricks, natural stone, stabilized soil, ribbed blocks, pipe crushing strength, sieve analysis, H2O absorption, silt content, specific gravity, abrasion, organic impurity, mix design
Consultancy Services at EiABC
EiABC provides research based consultancy in many fields. Design consultancy and short-term trainings are among the major services. Consultancy agreements can be negotiated and signed with EiABC for tasks ranging from feasibility study to full package design or assesment consultancies. The following are the major fields for consultancy services:
Architectural Design, Urban Design, Urban Planning, Structural Design, Project
Management, Construction Management, Quality Management, Environmental Design, Resource Management, Architectural and Cultural Hertitage, etc.

IT Services at EiABC
The institute provides IT services through its IT unit. Major activities are:

Printing, copying and plotting facilities for large and small formats in all colors and black and white are present at EiABC. The Repro Service is facilitated by new and modern machines.
