MATERIAL RESEARCH AND TESTING CENTE
The Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) is an autonomous Institute of Technology under the umbrella of the Addis Ababa University. The EiABC is providing teaching, research and technology transfer on high international standards. It is committed to fostering the socio-economic and industrial development of Ethiopia. Our responsiveness to the national needs is underlined by our close collaboration with the private and public sector. Research and academic consultancies are targeted to technology and knowledge transfer for direct application in practice.
EiABC has a clear vision of becoming a leading institute in its field in the region. EiABC has already successfully implemented the reform of studies as well as a new management and organizational structure. It is now focusing on upgrading its facilities, infrastructure and equipment to have a good basis for excellent teaching, research and services.
The Material Research and Testing Center will be one of our core units to provide high quality and customer-oriented services to the public and private sector. It will be re-organized and put under new management. The laboratories and machines will be upgraded to state-of-the-art technologies. The scope of technical and consultancy services will be expanded. The activities of the MRTC are implemented in close cooperation with the Chair of Construction Materials & Geotechniques at EiABC.
EiABC is now looking for new, highly qualified and committed staff to build up the Construction Materials and Soil Testing Unit to make it an entrepreneurial unit of EiABC and the leading service provider in its field in the country.

Will be responsible for daily operation of soils laboratory in Addis Ababa. Will perform basic and more advanced soil tests. · Will assist and oversee technicians and assistants working in laboratory. · Must have sound knowledge of laboratory tests, field-testing and inspection. · Knowledge of Ethiopian Standards (in addition knowledge of ASTM test specifications and methods would be an asset). · May assist in scheduling of field technicians. Working conditions can vary and are performed in the office, field or laboratory. · Will work under the direction and oversight of the Soil Section Head.

Vacancy Announcement
There is an ongoing model production on selected parts of Addis Ababa in a scale of 1:1000.The size of the model expands 12meters wide and 6.2meters length when fully completed. But for technical reasons it has been divided to 98 grids with each grid size being 0.90x0.90 meter. 2mm plywood is used as model making material.
The model production process comprises cutting and gluing/fixing components. Laser cutting machine is used to cut and engrave contours, spacers and building blocks. While man power is needed to assemble the parts using adhesives.
EiABC protoLAB needs two additional model makers for the project to assist in assembling the models for one month full time contract period from June1 –July1 2011. And the contract might be extended depending on the production pace and the candidates’ efficiency. A very high quality of precision along with highest professional standard and code of conduct is expected from the candidates.
